Left and Right Audio Reversed? How to Fix Swapped Channels
Our headphone test plays a tone on one side at a time. If you heard “left” in your right ear, the channels are swapped. Here is how to find out why.
1. Check how you are wearing them
Look for the small L and R marks inside the headband or on each earbud stem. Wearing headphones backwards is the most common cause, especially with symmetrical designs.
2. Check for a “swap channels” setting
- Windows: some audio drivers (Realtek, Dolby, Nahimic) have a “swap left/right” or speaker configuration option in their control app.
- macOS: open Audio MIDI Setup → select your output → Configure Speakers, and check which channel goes to which side.
- Android and iPhone: there is no swap setting; if channels are reversed on a phone, suspect the headphones or an adapter.
3. Check adapters and splitters
Cheap 3.5 mm adapters and USB-C dongles are sometimes wired incorrectly. Test without the adapter, or with a different one.
4. Check the app or game
Some games and video players have their own “reverse stereo” option. If the channels are only swapped in one app, check that app’s audio settings.
5. Test on another device
If the channels are swapped on every device and you are wearing them correctly, the headphones were wired wrong at the factory or after a repair. Return or replace them.
Run the headphone test again after each change.
